Born November 28, 1901 in Miyagi Prefecture, Ujiie Kōzan (Ujiie Kenzō) studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Hosoda Yōzan. He became an instructor in 1950 and belonged to the Tohoku branch of the Tozan-ryū Shakuhachi Gaku-kai.
